Triclabendazole is an anthelmintic medication used primarily for the treatment of fascioliasis, which is an infection caused by liver flukes such as Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica in both adults and children aged six years and older. It is also effective against paragonimiasis in some cases, another disease caused by lung flukes. Triclabendazole belongs to the benzimidazole class of drugs and works by impairing the parasite’s microtubule function, ultimately resulting in the parasite’s death. It is considered the drug of choice for fascioliasis worldwide and is included on the World Health Organization’s Essential Medicines list due to its proven efficacy and the absence of similarly effective alternatives.
